Just looking at the date of my last post. Its hard to believe it has been two months.
If you were to look at the car now, then I guess you wouldn’t notice much of a difference to the pics from the last post, but it is the last lot of fiddly bits that take so much time. Also my planned leave in August was cancelled due to a work project going off the rails and taking a lot longer than expected.
Repairs to the sill covers took a lot of time, getting new metal shaped, cutting and welding in, then finishing. The etch primer went on those today. From what I can gather from my other car and the base coat of colour when taking them back to bare metal, these were done in silver and so it will be this time.
The wiper motor that I had previously cleaned and painted, well on fitting new brushes, it didn’t work so it was a matter of dragging out the box of spare bits, finding another, fitting the brushes, testing, then cleaning, painting and finally fitting.
The horn hadn’t sounded a note in anger for at least 30 years and on hooking it up for testing it was noticeable silent. It made no noise at all in fact. So it was pulled down, the points cleaned and reassembled. Much to my delight it sounded that familiar loud note from all those years ago, The chipped paint was then stripped away back to bare metal the unit sprayed.
During the two months I had received another box of bits from England. The sagging Aussie dollar is making this part not nearly as enjoyable as it had been. The bits consisted mostly of rubbers and seals, but amongst it was also the new rear tail lamps and front parking lamps ( I intend to fit an amber/white LED bulb to these front lights so they will double as indicators …there is some really nifty technology out there these days). These have been fitted up to car as a check.
The big news for the two months is that I have found a spray shop that has agreed to take on the final body work and exterior paint job ! That has been a great relief as I was becoming increasingly concerned by the blank looks on peoples faces when asking them if they wanted to quote on a morris minor respray. I am doubly pleased as it turned out that the shop that I first went to and had heard the best reports about were the ones that finally got back to me and said they were able to take it on. The car is booked in for the 17th of October and I hope to have it back by mid february if not in time for Christmas. All going to plan the vehicle should be registered by April next year which will mark two years since the project began in ernest. On reflection my initial estimate of 9 months was pretty naive !
